Countess Anna S. Stroganova and Her Son - 1796-97
oil on canvas, 35-1/2" x 29"
Hermitage
Anna Sergeyevna Stroganova (1765-1824), née Trubetskaya, was the wife of Grigori Aleksandrovich Stroganov; she is portrayed with her son Sergei Grigorievich, 2nd Count Stroganov (1794-1882). On the surface of the canvas a square, enclosing the heads of the mother and child, is distinctly visible. Outside the square the painting is also by the artist's hand, as confirmed by the similar manner, paint analysis and radiography. Evidently the picture was conceived of a square in format, featuring only shoulder-length representations; later the painting was enlarged almost threefold and the format was changed to a vertical rectangle by relining the original version onto a new canvas. The mother was represented in three quarter length and the child in full length.
