Marie d'Andlau (1754-1817) was the daughter of the French philosopher, Claude Adrien Helvetius, and Anne Catherine "Minette" de Ligniville (1720-1800) a relation of Marie Antoinette. The sitter married Antoine Henri, comte d'Andlau (1746-1820). She was related to the Hapsburgs, Holy Roman Emperors and thus to Marie Antoinette which is how Claude Helvetius became the tutor of the Queen. Anne Catherine de Ligniville was also related to the marquise du Chatelet, Voltaire's girlfriend. Claude Helvetius was a philosopher of the age of enlightement and a friend of Voltaire.
