Princess Tufiakin - 1801-02
oil on canvas
Lived 1777-1802, the daughter of the Governor of Ecaterinoslav and the wife of Prince Peter Tufiakin.
Francis Kelly has identified the sitter, based on Vigee Le Brun's sad description: “...I began her portrait [in Moscow]; but as I was only able to finish the head, I took the painting back to Saint Petersburg, where not long afterwards I learned of the death of this pretty person. She was barely seventeen. I painted her as Iris, draped with a rippling scarf and seated on a bank of cloud.” - Chap. XXIV. (Iris is depicted with wings and a halo.)
