Marie Renee Louise de Fouquet - 1786
oil on canvas, 17-3/4 x 13-3/4 in, 45 x 35 cm
Private collection, France
Born March 17, 1778. Great Niece of one of VLB's most prominent sitters, the controller General, Charles Alexandre de Calonne. Fled France in 1792 with her family and returned in 1803. The painting remains with the sitter's family. A copy of this portrait exists with a flower in her hair, and was once attributed to Grueze's pupil, Mlle Ledoux.

Countess Valois de Valmar - date?
oil on canvas, 29-1/2 x 23- 1/2 in
Probably Mme de La Motte (née Mlle de Saint-Rémy), mistress to Cardinal Louis René Édouard de Rohan. Her brother Saint-Rémy and herself were recognised by the king and the queen, and given the name and title of "Valois," from the [extinct?] line of baron de Valois, a bastard of Henri II. La Motte and Cardinal de Rohan were behind the Necklace Affair that embarrassed Marie Antoinette in 1785, so VLB may have intentionally left the sitter off her list.
