Frederick Augustus Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol - 1791
oil on canvas, 39-1/2" x 29-1/2" National Trust, Ickworth, Suffolk.
Lord Bristol the founder of Ickworth who commissioned two portraits by Vigee
Le Brun and a copy of her Uffizi self
portrait. This painting was completed in Naples, Italy. Note Vesuvius
smoking in the background. She used Vesuvius in several works especially
those of Lady Hamilton. In Souvenirs she tells of several breathtaking
encounters with danger on its slopes. Such was her fascination, she returned
time after time, scorched. In most other respects, Vigee was timid.
