Vigée Le Brun's Home Page | Index to Art Pages | Vigée Le Brun's Gallery ART PAGE 13 Daughters of Paul I of Russia - 1796 Oil on canvas, 99cm x 99cm Hermitage, St. Petersburg Alexandra Pavlovna (1783-1801) on the left and her younger sister Yelena Pavlovna (1784-1803) were the daughters of Paul I and Maria Fyodorovna. Alexandra married the Palatine of Hungary in 1799. Yelena married the heir to the duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin the same year. According to Vigee Le Brun, Catherine the Great (their grandmother) did not like the original portrait costumes and colors, and she revised it. However, radiography only revealed a change in the position of Yelena's left hand (which had been around her sister's waist). Thus, it would appear that Vigee Le Brun repainted the portrait, rather than merely revising the costumes. The artist was paid 3,000 Rubles for this portrait. Baron Grigory Alexsandrovich Stroganov - 1793 Oil on canvas, 92cm x 66cm oval Hermitage, St. Petersburg. Stroganov (1770-1857) received the title of count in 1826, served as ambassador to Sweeden, Spain, and Turkey. After 1837 he was a member of the Council of State. This portrait is a companion to the Vigee Le Brun portrait of Stroganov's wife, Anna Sergeyevna (done in 1793 in Viena). The companion painting was sold in New York by Parke-Bernet Galleries in 1944. Self Portrait - 1800 Oil on canvas, 78.5cm x 68cm Hermitage, St. Petersburg This self portrait for the Hermitage may be the last painting Vigee Le Brun completed in Russia. Vigee Le Brun portrayed herself painting a portrait of Grand Duke Alexander Pavlovich's wife, Elizabeth Alekseyevna.
